Nolan Keller Briefing

Fifty, Stuck, and Still Writing

A milestone birthday, a stubborn ending, and a whole lot of books worth checking out.

Personal Milestone

I turned fifty over the weekend.

That's a strange sentence to type.

I don't feel dramatically different, which is probably a good thing. Mostly, it made me think about how fast the years stack up and how much I still want to do with the time ahead of me. More books. Better books. More stories finished instead of merely planned.

Klack Mountain Status

The Devil on Klack Mountain is giving me trouble.

I'm at the end of the book, which ought to be the part where everything accelerates and the story starts dragging me toward the finish line.

Instead, I'm stuck.

So I'm going back to the beginning.

I'm rereading the entire manuscript, looking for the thread I've lost somewhere along the way.

Sometimes the problem with an ending isn't actually in the ending. It's a promise made earlier that wasn't paid off, an emotional beat that didn't land, or a character decision that quietly pushed the story a few degrees off course. I'm hoping the reread helps me spot it and get Nolan moving again.

Recommended Reading

This week's author swap is No Easy Target by Drew Avera.

Alone and outgunned, Mitchell has no backup and no second chance. There's only Steven Mitchell, his trusty sidearm, and whatever he can find lying around the tunnel.

If you like thrillers built around one capable person being forced to improvise under pressure, this sounds like a fun one.

Heroes Worth Fighting For

I also have a big Noblebright promotion running this month.

And when I say big, I mean 70 authors.

Heroes Worth Fighting For is packed with fantasy stories about heroes who still believe courage, loyalty, sacrifice, and hope matter even when the world gives them every reason to quit.

With seventy authors involved, there's a lot to browse. If you're looking for your next fantasy read, this is a good place to start.

That's the briefing for this week.

Fifty years down. One stubborn ending in front of me.

Back to work.
